What are Calories?

Calories are units of energy that are released whilst your body breaks down food and drink. The more calories food has; the more energy it will provide your body. When you eat more calories then you need; your body stores the extra calories as body fat. If you eat too many fewer calories than your body needs you may cause harm to your health. The body needs calories not just to keep you moving and thinking.  Calories are also required to keep your heart beating and your lungs breathing.   Therefore calorie intake is necessary, but to lose weight you need to consume less calories from either food, drink as well as increasing your activity levels.

It doesn’t necessarily mean to eat less but rather to choose food and drink that consists of less calories. It’s really that simple?

So why do some people find it difficult to lose weight?

It is difficult to consistently consume the right amount of fewer calories.  There are so many distractions such as social gathering which usually consist of eating & drinking.  Plus food does taste divine and there’s so much choice.  Another difficulty is due to a possible lack of understanding of how many calories are in particular foods or drinks.  Rather some people look at food or drink and presume it is healthy by its appearance rather than understanding what it consists of.

To lose weight you need to understand how many calories you need each day. Everyone is different we all have different body compositions. We are tall or short, active or inactive, have a low or high metabolism,  have active or inactive jobs. These are the things you need to consider when calculating how many calories you actually need each day.

Due to us all being different means we all need different amounts of calories to survive and we need to know this before we can calculate how many calories we need to eat to lose weight. We cannot assume that we can eat the same as someone else and lose weight; its an individual journey.  It is estimated that on average a woman needs  2000 calories a day.  An average man needs 2500 calories; however this may not be how many calories you need.  To do this we would have to consider a variety of factors to determine your activity levels your age and the amount of weight you currently are. This is a mathematical calculation.

Yes losing weight is really that simple; calculate what you need each day and reduced that amount of calories = reduction of weight.

Next Steps:

Ideally aim to lose 1 to 2 pounds a week until you reach your healthy weight for your height. Because 3500 calories equals about 1 pound, It’s estimated that you need to eat 3500 calories to lose 1  pound a week. This calculate to 500 calories a day less. This is an estimate and you will know in time as you track your calories. Ideally the weight you lose should be fat and not muscle. Reducing your calories too drastically can lead to muscle loss if you’re reducing your calories over the recommended 500 calories a day then you are at risk off muscle loss. You want to be strong and at a healthy weight.

Step 1: How much calories should you eat?

No need to do the maths.  Below is a simple but highly accurate scientific calorie Calculator enter your details in the Calculator below to figure out how many calories you should be eating and drinking per day to lose weight.

Step 2:  How Should I Increase my Level of Activity?

If you want to loose weight fast, then you will need to choose activities that burn a lot of calories. This could include walking, jogging, running, cycling, swimming, weight training, interval training, yoga and many more. Choose an activity which challenges your physical capabilities and makes you feel breathless and increases your body temperature. Please note you can never compensate through activity for a poor diet. The priority is calorie intake.

Question: ‘What I Value?

What do you Value? Think about it…… What do you spend most of your time thinking about? It may be good or bad, however that is what you think of and value.

What you value affects everything and may even go against your goals/desires. For example you could desire to go on a vacation to a hot beach destination. Strolling on the beach, wearing your favourite bikini or shorts, pausing to listen and watch the waves as the sun gleams on your body. However you could value what people think of you on the beach in your bikini or shorts. You may think that they see you as unfit/unpleasant. Thinking that you may have to delay booking you vacation until you get that ‘Summer Body’.

Do you have a goal, yet value the opinions of others? We may be limiting our own desires by the value we put on ourselves. Believing that we can not achieve? Have you wanted to apply for that job, but not applied because you think your not worthy of that position?

Really think about what you value …. i.e, assume. Question it! Change it

Your values should match your desires/goals. Value what is important to YOU, what will help YOU to grow. Value what YOU can contribute to your community.

Any value that hinders you, get rid of. This will take sometime but can be done with determination. However phase 1 is to explore and question ‘What do YOU Value?’ I will write a blog on how get to rid of negative values.

A Great De-Stress Activity with my Dog

Maybe I take my little dog, Chico for granted? He often lie’s down staring at me as I selfishly get on with my tasks. He sure does enjoy a walk and to be honest; so do I. When we are about to leave the house I grab his lead and collar and he goes crazy. Breathing heavy and running around my feet.

I sit calmly and wait for him to calm down. He knows he needs to sit still or I wont put his collar/lead on. As soon as I am out I feel great, I can feel his happy energy and we start to walk together. I look down at his little brown body and his happy walk and I feel happy. My lifestyle is really busy so I don’t get to take him out for walks as often as I would like. But walking with him is a great stress buster.

It doesn’t matter where we go, we are a team and together. I enjoy taking him to Sandwell Valley Country Park. Its beautiful there. I block an negative thoughts, I don’t think about work or what I should of done. Rather I’m in the moment, enjoying the environment and the company of Chico. I often walk by the lakes and listen to the birds and the branches on the trees swaying in the wind. When I walk by the lake I usually see mostly the swans gliding along the water with the Canadian Geese, the Lilly’s. Sandwell Valley Country Park is bigger than most people think. Yes sure there’s the children parks but there’s more to area than that. They have tennis courts, golf, mini golf, outside gym, farm and some great walks. Chico and I love it there, you can be with the crowd or walk down a hidden path and be completely on your own.

If you live close to West Brromwich and are looking for somewhere to destress, walk your dog or take your children I recommend Sandwell Valley Country Park(AKA Dartmouth Park), Salters Lane, West Bromwich, B71 4BG. If not may be another park nearer to you. There’s no point stressing to find Sandwell valley 🙂

Plan to Make a Change

Why is it that when you feel really strongly about doing something; that somehow you talk yourself out of it? Most nights I sit down and think “right, tomorrow I am going to ……… I know I don’t like doing it; but after I will be one step closer to…… “.

I often think of my fitness or nutrition goals or simply something at work. I am really motivated to make a change. Then when it comes to putting my plan in to action I back-down. Then I feel fed up with myself.

Why do we do this? Thinking of a simple task to do; may be the problem. We need to consider the bigger picture. What will we achieve by our actions? What made you want to plan the change? For me, I know that if I did stick to my healthy eating that I would be closer to my ideal weight, energy levels etc. I feel really strongly about this, so it motivates me. Especially if my goal is specific. Specific enough to visualise. So now I say to myself “I want to eat healthy to keep a consistent level of energy and to reduce my fat. I would like to weigh 7 pounds lighter in 12 weeks. Then I can fit in to this dress”.

Now this will motivate me not to eat that doughnut. I have a Plan, a REAL Plan. I know what I want to achieve and by when. I know that my actions will either Make or Hinder my goal.

Why wait? Nothing will be any different. How long have you been thinking of doing something different? There will always be something blocking your potential, its up to you to decide when you are taking control of your like. This is the youngest you we will ever be… Make the change NOW!

About me

Let me Introduce Myself……

My name is Kelly Hurd, I am 41 and have over 15 years of experience of Physical Health and Wellbeing. I have 2 daughters that are pretty much grown up. I have had many challenges in my life, yet have always battled through with a positive attitude. Continually renewing my perspective, with my inquisitive nature.

I am new to blogging, I know I will enjoy it, its going to be rewarding. I will be sharing my thoughts for what I enjoy.  I like to talk to people who have the same interests as me.  I spend a lot of my time at work or doing things for other people.  But when I spend a small amount of free time on fitness, health or wellbeing I am in my element.  So, I cannot imagine not blogging.  Sharing my passion with others.  knowing that blogging could if I work hard enough be a new career for me is exciting.

I am hoping that blogging will enable me to meet new people and learn from others.  I hope it will create opportunities to meet like-minded individuals, share my hobbies, beliefs, values and goals. Talking in a crowd will be definitely be out of my comfort zone.  I have a reluctance to speak to others that are not local, due to feeling uncomfortable speaking with my strong Black Country accent.  Blogging will be a way to break through my limiting beliefs that are holding me back from experiencing possibly the best out of life.

I enjoy personal development and am always seeking new things to learn about.  I enjoy researching food, exercise or behaviours.  Always seeking clarity and myth busting.  The reason why I will love to blog is I feel I have so much to say.  I want to influence people’s negative perceptions of their reality of themselves and the people around them.

To understand yourself is pure freedom and then knowing about food – nutrition, physical and mental health is taking full control of your existence.

Join me and subscribe, enjoy reading as I share my thoughts, opinions, observations or to simply ask me questions about a variety of my subjects.
